Most State driver’s license offices are open
8:00 AM to 5:00 PM weekdays and appointments are accepted. New residents must
get a North Carolina driver’s license within 60 days of establishing
residency. You must take the written skills, sign recognition and vision
tests. The NC Driver’s Handbook is available at all Department of Motor
Vehicles offices or you can go online and request a copy. Their web address
is: www.dmv.dot.state.nc.us/driverlicense/drivershandbook You need to present your current out-of state
license or two other forms of identification, including one with your birth
date, your social security card (not a copy), proof of liability insurance,
and proof of residency. New residents with a valid license are usually exempt
from a road skills test. Only first-time drivers must take a road test. The Class C license costs $12.50 and is issued
for a five-year period. This permits operation of personal automobiles and
small trucks. Motorcyclists must pass a road skills test. Many of the above tasks

Vehicles usually must be
registered in NC within 60 days of establishing residency. NC residents must
renew vehicle registration annually. Before you can register your vehicle, you
must have a NC driver’s license. Bring you car title and a valid registration
card from your previous State. If the title to your car is held in lien, you
must provide the lien holder’s name and address on a State form for title
release. You need to provide proof of insurance by a licensed NC insurer, at
or above minimum standards. Vehicles are considered
personal property in North Carolina and their value, as determined by the
State, will be included in your personal property taxes. Fees: Title fee is $35.00 and
registration fee is $20.00. Personal “vanity” plate
may be purchased at an additional $20.00. |
